New York’s Frick Collection is to reopen to the public in April 2025 following a major renovation of its historic home on Fifth Avenue.

The project by Selldorf Architects involved restoring galleries on the museum’s first floor and opening up the Frick mansion’s second floor to the public for the first time.

Ian Wardropper, the Frick’s outgoing director, said: “As we look ahead to reopening our doors, we are excited to welcome visitors back to enjoy what makes the Frick such a unique museum within the cultural landscape of New York City.”

To inaugurate the new first-floor exhibition galleries, three works by Vermeer will be on view from 18 June through 8 September in the ‘Vermeer’s Love Letters’ exhibition. Two of these works are on loan, from the Rijksmuseum and the National Gallery of Ireland.

Also on the first floor, the new Cabinet Gallery will display works on paper by artists including Degas, Goya, Ingres, Rubens, and Whistler.

As for the second floor, this was formerly the Frick family’s private living quarters and has served as offices since the museum opened in 1935. Several spaces have now been restored and transformed into a suite of 10 galleries.

For the reopening, a series of commissioned works by sculptor Vladimir Kanevsky will be on display throughout the museum’s first and second floor galleries.

“The intimate encounters with art offered by our historic galleries, along with new spaces transformed from former domestic interiors, remain a cornerstone of the Frick experience,” Wardropper added.

“These spaces have been enhanced thanks to the efforts of the architects, artisans, preservation experts, curators, and many others who have made our historic renovation and enhancement project a reality.”

In late April, the Frick will offer a weeklong festival of performances and special events, starting on 26 April and running through 8 May. This will mark the debut of a new 220-seat auditorium, designed by Selldorf Architects.

Elizabeth M. Eveillard, chair of the Frick’s board of Trustees, said: “The Frick’s reopening is an invitation to all New Yorkers and art lovers from around the world to discover – or rediscover – incredible works of art from our permanent collection, displayed in the painstakingly restored setting of our historic home.”

Earlier this year, the Frick Collection announced Axel Rüger as its next director.
