Exhibitors, events & education not to miss at IAAPA Expo 2024

IAAPA Expo in Orlando, Florida, is the premier event for the visitor attractions space. It brings together industry professionals to discover new products, cutting-edge services, insightful education sessions, and impactful networking opportunities. IAAPA Expo 2024 will take place from 18 to 22 November. The education element runs from 18 to 21 November. Meanwhile, the trade show floor is open from 19 to 22 November.

The event is a one-stop destination for professionals in the leisure and attractions industry. Throughout the event, various educational sessions, workshops, tours, and more will allow attendees to explore the latest trends and key issues and also learn from their peers across the industry.

As well as this, a vast trade show floor will encompass the newest rides, video games, VR attractions, design theming, motion simulators, POS technology, water solutions, F&B, health and safety equipment, playground equipment, arcade and coin machines, and much more.

New additions on the agenda this year include a special Legends celebration event for the IAAPA Hall of Fame inductees. There is also the new IAAPA Street Market, IAAPA Haunting Grounds, the world’s first AI-powered recycling kiosk, a drone show, and much more.

Special events at IAAPA Expo 2024

Over the weekend of November 16 and 17, additional ticketed pre-conference events include IAAPA Rookies: FEC 101 on Saturday evening and the all-day IAAPA Institute for Attractions Professionals on Sunday. There are also two charity events on Sunday: the 14th Annual IAAPA Charity Motorcycle Run for Give Kids the World and the 21st Annual IAAPA International Charity Golf Tournament. Additionally, there is an evening EDUTour to Fun Spot America.

On Monday morning, there will be an EDUTour to DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida as well as a Lunch and Learn session with leaders from Qiddiya and Saudi Entertainment Ventures (SEVEN). Then, in the afternoon, there will be a Zoos and Aquariums Community Experience and an EDUTour that goes behind the screams at Halloween Horror Nights.

Evening receptions on Monday 18 November include the Zoos and Aquariums Reception, the Food and Beverage Operators Reception, the Water Park Operators Welcome Event, the Museums and Science Centres Reception and the Family Entertainment Centres Reception. There is also the LEGENDS: A Hall of Fame Celebratory Affair, honouring this year’s IAAPA Hall of Fame inductees. This includes a live auction, with all money raised supporting the IAAPA Foundation.

Ticketed events on Tuesday include the IAAPA Leadership Symposium – Breaking Down Silos, and both the Opening Reception and Young Professional Receptions. There is also a series of Lunch and Learn sessions. Attendees should also keep their eyes on the sky at 6:15 p.m. and 8:05 p.m. and again on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. for an all-new drone show sponsored by Sky Elements.

On Wednesday 20 November, there is an EDUTour of Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. There is also an invite-only Influencer Breakfast, which Triotech is sponsoring, as well as the annual leadership breakfast, and more Lunch and Learn sessions. In the evening, ticketed events include the Carnival and Showmen’s Reception, the Latin America Fiesta, the Europe, Middle East and Africa Reception, and the Water Park Social.

More ticketed events will then take place on Thursday 21 November. For example, the 18th Annual IAAPA Footprints from the Heart 5k Fun Run and 1 Mile Walk, an EDUTour of Legoland Florida, and a selection of Learning Breakfast Sessions. Finally, in the evening, the annual IAAPA Celebrates event will head to Epcot.

Education sessions

The IAAPA Expo 2024 agenda features various educational sessions exploring topics from across the attractions industry. Here are some of the highlights to look forward to:

Monday 18 November

Monday morning starts with a session called It’s All Fun and Games: Exploring Gamification in Parks and Attractions. Erica McCay of Valtech, Logan Zawacki from Sally Dark Rides, David Andrade of Theory Studios, Meghan Gardner of Guardian Adventures, and Daniel Kaufmann, Associate Professor, will explore gamification and how it encourages guest loyalty. 

Then, in Bridging the Gap: Inclusive Insights from Museums, Zoos, and Themed Attractions, attendees can experience firsthand perspectives from museums, zoos, and themed attractions. The speakers will share best practices and actionable approaches to prioritise inclusivity. The panel includes Emily O’Hara of the Detroit Zoological Society, Sarah Drees from Solid Light, Melissa Leahy of Universal Creative, and Sarah Macey from Little Ray’s Exhibitions.

In Creating FOMO-Worthy Experiences through Experiential Activations, Ben Thompson of Storyland Studios will discuss the growing trend of limited engagement opportunities and their activations, as well as examining their crucial role in audience and consumer building.

Meanwhile, in Redefining Immersive Experiences, panellists will share strategies, processes, and solutions through real-world case studies, discussing how they incorporate immersion without compromising educational outcomes, community engagement, or accessibility. Speakers include Cynthia Brown of Museum EXP, Jesse Kramer from Conner Prairie, Monica Ramsey of The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, Abby Bysshe of The Franklin Institute, and Erika Kiessner of GSM Projects.

Worldbuilding, walkthroughs, and workshops

On Monday afternoon, in World Building with Meow Wolf: AVL and Integrated Technologies, Meow Wolf’s VP of design and integration, Derek Pendergrass, will explain how light, sound, integrated technologies, and video come together to make immersive art exhibits live, breathe, and respond to guest interactions.

Then, in Extending the Experience: Enhancing Attractions with Interactive Walkthroughs, Katie Baker of Simworx will show how integrating interactive walkthroughs into new or existing rides can transform and level up these experiences. 

Tell Stories that People Want to Hear: Innovative Approaches to Experiential Storytelling will feature the secrets behind crafting rich, story-driven experiences that leave a lasting impression on visitors. The panel includes Brett Bagenstose of NeoPangea, Jasmin Jodry from MOTO, Christopher Morrison of Reality+, and Lee Francis IV from the Indigenous Imagination Workshop.

Exploring Current Trends: Family Experiences will focus on the current trend of family experiences. It will also look at the different rides, shows, and attractions that fall into this category. Attendees can hear from Carl Crider of Delgrossos Family Amusement Park, Logan Zawacki from Sally Dark Rides, Yael Coifman of Leisure Development Partners, Andreas Andersen from Liseberg, and Jeff Hornick of B Morrow Productions.

Later, in Money in Merchandising: Maximizing Sales from Analytics to OperationsLaura Iles, COO at Integrated Insight, will share guiding principles for optimising revenue through merchandising. At the same time, in Marketing Optimization: Leveraging Data-Driven StrategiesJessica Dreiling, chief marketing officer at Integrated Insight, and Kristi Keister, senior marketing consultant at Integrated Insight, will deliver a presentation focused on marketing optimisation.

Tom Acomb of AOA and Mike West from Innovative West will present The Pitching Playbook: Mastering the Art of Persuasive Presentations. Crafting the perfect pitch is essential for entrepreneurs. So, this session will look at how to develop compelling pitches that captivate investors.

In a session called Reality Bytes—How Extended Reality (XR) Attractions are Reshaping Location-based Entertainment, participants can learn how VR, shared, and mixed reality delivered through wearable technology or immersive enclosures revolutionise guest experiences by blending physical and digital. Speakers include Bob Cooney of The VR Collective and Kevin Williams of KWP Limited.

Emerging Trends, Techniques and Technologies in Experiential Design will provide attendees with a comprehensive look into how cutting-edge technologies and innovative storytelling techniques are creating unforgettable guest experiences. It will use case studies highlighting cutting-edge attractions and cultural destinations worldwide. The panellists are Shawn McCoy of Imagine, Cynthia Sharpe of Thinkwell Group, Zoe Thatcher from Creative Principals, and Jenny Lim of Gigantic Playground.

Food Trends 2024 is a chance for IAAPA Expo 2024 attendees to catch up on the latest food trends in the industry, from theme parks, water parks, museums, science centres, and FECs. The panel includes Jon Vigue of Wild Adventures Theme Park, Jeff Whiting from Whiting’s Foods, Inc., and Gary Gochenour of SSA Group.

Tuesday 19 November

Tuesday morning at IAAPA Expo 2024 begins with Hasbro: Innovating the Waterpark, featuring the development team behind the concept for the first-ever Hasbro waterpark. This session includes Matthew Cross of OE Experiences and Josh Martin from Martin Aquatic Design & Engineering. They will also be joined by Matthew Proulx of Hasbro, Inc.. and Chris Grap of Mall of America.

IDEA in Entertainment: Designing With Everyone In Mind will explore the importance of IDEA DEIA [DS1] throughout the live entertainment creative process. Attendees will hear from Mel McGowan of Storyland Studios, Genein Letford of CAFFE Strategies, and Monai Rooney from B Morrow Productions.

Solution Spotlights

The first of a series of Solution Spotlight sessions is Gateway Ticketing Systems – The Power of Website Customization: Tailor, Target, and Win!

In this session, attendees will learn how to leverage data-driven customisation to promote products effectively and showcase new offerings. The Gateway Ticketing Systems team will demonstrate how to transform a website into a powerful growth tool.

Brogent Technologies Inc. – Redefining the Flying Theater: A new Era of Flying is another Solution Spotlight. This will explore a new era of immersive experiences and the future of flying theatres.

DEAI and more

Inclusion and Accessibility Champions: The Creative Minds Behind Morgan’s Wonderland 2024 Expansion is moderated by Sharon Newhardt, director of inclusion and culture for Morgan’s organisation. It also features Richard Pretlow, park president of Morgan’s Wonderland, alongside Vittorio Babini of Zamperla and Mike Frueh of SimEx-Iwerks.

Later, the annual IDEA Roundtable is a chance to join fellow industry professionals to discuss and share current directives about this critical and relevant topic. Broken into several timed rounds, attendees can learn firsthand about multiple topics based on their interests.

SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi: The Making of the World’s Largest Indoor Marine-Life Theme Park will offer an in-depth exploration of the creation, design, and development of the world’s first indoor Marine Life Theme Park on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. Speakers include Jonathan Brown, Glenn Davidson and Timothy Sau Kin NG of Miral. They will also be joined by Al Cross of PGAV Destinations and Scott Gass of United Parks & Resorts.

Jakob Wahl, IAAPA president, will then round out the afternoon when he presents this year’s IAAPA Fireside Chat: Inspiring Minds of the Industry. He will chat with Scott O’Neil of Merlin Entertainments, Robert Dahl of Karls Erlebnis-Dörfer, and Steve Thomas from Belmont Park.

Wednesday 20 November

A morning session on Wednesday at IAAPA Expo 2024 called Using Artificial Intelligence to Your Advantage will examine how attractions can use AI in their everyday marketing and sales operations to help maximise their ROI and do more with less. This will feature insights from Anthony Palermo of Connect&GO, Jessi O’Daniel from Shipwreck Island Water Park, and Tyler Jacobs of Morey’s Piers.

In Creating Waves: A Conversation about Surf, Josh Martin of Martin Aquatic Design & Engineering will highlight some of the top surf simulators and wave generation technology. He will also examine the unique aspects of each system.

Staying on the water park theme, Create a Good Inspection Checklist in Your Water Park will be a power-packed 20-minute session. This will be led by David Bromilow of Mobaro. He will share essential insights on checklists tailored specifically for aquatic facilities.

In the afternoon, Unveiling Insights: Lessons Learned from the Evolution of Immersive Attractions & Experiences will provide valuable insight into key success factors for immersive attractions and experiences. Natalia Bakhlina of Leisure Development Partners will present this session.

Solution Spotlights at IAAPA Expo 2024

The first of several Solution Spotlights for the day is RocketRez – Growing Up: How to take the Attractions Industry from Adolescent to Adult. John Pendergrast of RocketRez will discuss the two critical areas attractions must prioritise: data and communications. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to enhance these elements, ensuring their attractions are ready for the future in 2025.

Another Solution Spotlight is Storyland Studio, Inc. – Secrets of Storytelling. During this, Ben Thompson will share the secrets of good storytelling with examples of powerful experiences driven by compelling narratives.

Next is Solution Spotlight: ROLLER—2025 Benchmarks: The Cheat Sheet for Business Growth. In this session, ROLLER‘s Brett Sheridan will unveil the latest 2025 industry benchmarks for visitor attractions. This includes critical data on guest experience, revenue generation, and operational efficiency. The session will also analyse market performance, emerging trends, and key metrics to help attendees make informed decisions.

DOF Flying Theatre

DOF Robotics will also present a Solution Spotlight in the afternoon. In Next-Gen Amusement: How AI and DOF Robotics Are Transforming Attractions, Ozgur Kucukates will talk about how AI is revolutionising personalized guest experiences, enhancing operational efficiency, boosting safety, and creating immersive attractions. He will also discuss how DOF Robotics uses AI to push the boundaries and redefine amusement experiences.

Legends 2024: Legends Who Share Their Secrets

One session not to miss at IAAPA Expo 2024 is this year’s Legends Panel on Wednesday afternoon. For 22 years, the Legends Panel, moderated and curated by Bob Rogers of BRC Imagination Arts, has offered essential knowledge sharing from creative leadership. The panel for 2024 features three talents who exemplify Ralph Waldo Emerson’s quote:

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”

Attendees can hear from Joe Pine, author of The Experience Economy; Margaret Chandra Kerrison, author of Immersive Storytelling for Real and Imagined Worlds: A Writer’s Guide; and Bob Weis, author of Dream Chasing: My Four Decades of Success and Failure with Walt Disney Imagineering.

Thursday 21 November

Thursday begins with Unlocking Inclusive Thrills: Rider Accessibility in Amusement Parks with ASTM F24 Standards. This session explores rider accessibility in amusement parks and attractions. Anthony Rossi of Hersheypark and Mark Stepanian of CAVU Designwerks will present it.

Later in the morning, Transforming IP into Tangible Magic: The Art of Immersive Attractions will explore how globally recognised IPs are being translated into innovative physical worlds, offering guests unparalleled, memorable encounters. It will include insights from Shawn McCoy of Imagine, Greg Lombardo of Netflix CPX, LLC, Alexis Scalice from Universal Live Entertainment Group, David Hutchinson of Path Entertainment Group and Jason Egan of Egan Productions.

In the first of two Solution Spotlights, Hasbro—Innovation in Global Experiences, Matthew Proulx will discuss the company’s latest trends and developments. A Solution Spotlight from TAIT will follow this.

In the afternoon, Empowering Women in Leadership: Insights from the Water Park Industry invites attendees to join a dynamic conversation with extraordinary women who not only occupy a “seat at the table” but “lead the table” within their water parks. This includes Lisa Hall of Universal Orlando Resort, Bridgette Bywater of Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, Melissa Lockwood from Baha Mar, Marah Rodriguez of Mobaro and Samantha Frachey from Grupo Lomas.

In Dancing Across Disciplinary Boundaries to Create Immersive Experiences, participants will take inspiration from real-world examples of innovative projects. The panellists are Linda Hung and Terry Brown of FORREC, Irene Eshak from Huitt-Zollars, Keith James of JRA, Part of RWS Global, and Luc Mayrand from Walt Disney Imagineering.

Later, in Optimizing Handover and Performance with On-Ride Data Integration, attendees can join Dollywood and Mobaro for an extended view of essential routines and data within maintenance and operations. This features Nick VanGelder and Kevin Russell of Herschend Family Entertainment. Finally, in the 2025 Economic Outlook and IAAPA Research UpdateKelly Repass will present IAAPA’s research offerings and highlight brand new results from the North America economic impact report for the attractions industry. In addition, Daryl Cronk of Tourism Economics will give an overview of current economic trends and forecasts for 2025.

Beaudry Interactive – booth #565

Beaudry Interactive, an experiential design and production studio that works with themed entertainment, museums, exhibitions, live shows, and branded experiences, will also be exhibiting.

The team will highlight recent projects, including the Currents interactive zone on the new Carnival Jubilee ship for Carnival Cruise Lines. The underwater-themed Currents zone is a two-deck-high promenade with a massive wave-shaped LED ceiling, six LED windows, show lighting, and an immersive sound system.

The Montgomery Whitewater Center boasts a cutting-edge recirculating river system built for sustainable water use. It has two channels, a 1,600-foot Olympic-standard competition channel and a 2,200-foot creek channel, which imitate natural river settings. It also uses a closed-loop water management system to save water and lessen its environmental effects.

In addition to creating bespoke shows tailored to specific events or park programming, Dronisos offers a catalogue of ready-to-enjoy spectacles, making premium, innovative art accessible to a broader audience. Le Petit Prince: A Celestial Voyage is inspired by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s timeless, philosophical tale. Falcon’s Creative Group – booth #2236

Falcon’s Creative Group, the entertainment design firm, will make a big announcement during IAAPA Expo 2024. A press event at the booth is scheduled at 4 p.m. on Tuesday 19 November, followed by a celebratory happy hour.

Earlier this year, Falcon’s Creative Group was chosen as a lead creative consultant for the world’s first Dragon Ball theme park. Qiddiya Investment Company and Toei Animation selected the company to deliver master planning, attraction design, and creative guardianship. The Dragon Ball theme park experience will occupy more than 500,000 square metres. It will play a significant role in Qiddiya City in Saudi Arabia, the world’s first metropolis designed for play.

Falcon’s Creative Group is assisting with the creative development of several entertainment experiences within Qiddiya City, in addition to the Dragon Ball theme park. These experiences include master planning the Qiddiya Water Theme Park and assisting with developing the world’s first Gaming and Esports district, which is also planned for the destination.

Greenspan - Revel & Roll West

Greenspan Projects recently shared details of its project to create a 27-hole indoor modular mini golf attraction for PAR3 Putt in Newport on the Levee, Kentucky, US. It has also announced a new partnership with Alltid Opplett in Bergen, Norway. The 2,200-square-metre venue is set to feature four street curling courses, six high-tech dart lanes, a karaoke room, two 9-hole digital and interactive mini golf courses and a large bar area.

Hero Zone, creators of immersive VR experiences, will exhibit a range of free-roam VR solutions that allow operators to choose one that fits their space and their business. The firm offers mobile VR setups, turnkey arenas, and the ability to build a Hero Zone free-roam play space in the following configurations: 15ft x 15ft for four players, 20ft x 20ft for up to six players, and 20ft x 30ft for up to eight players.

Last month, the company shared details of its collaboration with The Broken Controller VR Experience in California, US. This 4,000-square-foot attraction aims to “redefine the boundaries of gaming and entertainment through the immersive power of VR and AR.”

Hero Zone also recently highlighted its collaboration with NaVRtar, an innovative immersive entertainment retail venue in West London, UK. The attraction opened in Dickens Yard, a shopping and leisure destination, in 2019. It also has a partner franchise location in Amsterdam.

Holovis, a leading experience designer, will showcase its 360Golf product during IAAPA Expo 2024. The 360Golf technology incorporates advanced tracking technologies into the golf balls themselves. After registering at a kiosk, each team is given personalised golf balls, which the system can track from tee off. Sensors on the course identify who is playing, track the amount of strokes, and calculate scores automatically.

360Golf’s unique supershots and bonus points also add an exciting element to each game. The technology automatically tracks all these elements, allowing players to focus on having fun rather than keeping score.

Holovis partners with Butlin's

Holovis recently partnered with UK holiday brand Butlin’s in the most recent installation of its 360Golf system. This collaboration delivers the next generation of mini-golf to the brand-new £15m indoor activity facility, PLAYXPERIENCE, at the Bognor Regis Butlin’s resort. TechPutt opened on 7 October with three themed courses.

Huss Park Attractions, the German ride manufacturer, will showcase 22 attractions. This includes Break Dance 5, the first attraction from the new HUSS Signature Rides Collection.

Since launching in 1985, Break Dance has remained one of the most popular attractions at fairs and amusement parks. With over 100 units delivered, it is the most successful attraction ever designed and built by the manufacturer.

The first Break Dance 5’s world premiere was at Laser Dance Vienna Prater in Austria in August. Compared to previous models, the company has added 30% more power to the attraction. It has also increased the top speed by another 30%. The higher speeds of the central turntable and the gondola gyros create a more dynamic and powerful ride experience. At the same time, the redesign has been optimised with a particular focus on durability and safety.

The redesigned gondolas offer more space, and the seats with individual lap bars provide more comfort and safety. They can also optionally be equipped with onboard sound and even motion sound.

Last year, building on more than a century of history and over 50 years of experience in the amusement industry, the ride manufacturer launched a refreshed brand identity and website. It also announced the new HUSS Creative service and a revamped portfolio.

Immotion, the global leader in immersive edutainment, will also be at IAAPA Expo 2024. The firm recently won an award at the 2024 Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in the virtual reality category. Earlier this year, Immotion announced it is supporting work to protect the pangolin, a highly endangered species. It is doing so by providing funding to the international science-led conservation charity, the Zoological Society of London (ZSL).

Inowize – booth #3874

Inowize, a creative company delivering interactive experiences, will highlight QBIX, the unattended immersive 6-player gaming room. It features six unique games designed for players of all ages. The firm will also debut its latest game addition at the show, Mummy Twist. This is a treasure-hunting adventure in which players dodge the Red Mummy Eye in a race against time. 

Inowize at IAAPA 2024

QBIX was first unveiled at IAAPA Expo 2022. Since then, it has evolved into a fully realized, unattended multiplayer attraction. The product just requires a card swipe to unlock an immersive game world, which features 5D effects like motion floors and wind blasts for an engaging experience. The different game titles available for the platform offer interactive group experiences and also encourage repeat play.

Last year, Inowize released a new report on the QBIX attraction. This shows that it raises average occupancy rates to 27.2%, with an average of 1961 players a month across its locations. QBIX is increasing repeat visits as visitors return to the memorable attraction.

Intamin, a creator of record-breaking amusement rides, will share its latest news and projects during the show. The year 2024 marked some exciting developments for the company. SeaWorld San Antonio celebrated the launch of Catapult Falls, the first Flume Ride worldwide featuring a booster launch and the steepest flume drop at 53 degrees. Elsewhere, Linnanmäki in Finland welcomed guests to its new Gyro Swing, Swingi.

Significant enhancements were made to the new Hot Racer, Mahuka, at Walibi Rhône-Alpes in France. It has a refined chassis for improved ride comfort and track fit. Carbon fibre lap bars contribute to a lighter train and lower centre of gravity, ensuring a smoother ride experience. In July, Drayton Manor also introduced Gold Rush, the most innovative Family Launch Coaster, with a multi-experience layout configuration.

Intamin joined Dreamworld to announce a new thrill ride, King Claw, at IAAPA Expo Europe. It was also revealed that the new attraction will replace The Claw, one of Dreamworld’s most famous rides.

Legacy Entertainment

Legacy Entertainment, a leading theme park and resort design company, has recently unveiled details of two megaprojects totalling more than $500m in investment. It also revealed that several of its previously completed projects have hit impressive performance milestones. 

Uzbekistan’s capital, Tashkent, will soon be home to Central Asia’s largest and most luxurious entertainment venue, The Grand Serai. The 287,000-square-metre (70-acre) resort, designed by Legacy and inspired by the country’s rich cultural past, will include a next-generation water park, hotel, and immersive retail promenade.

Legacy recently won an international tender to design Beijing Haichang Ocean Park, dubbed “The Aquarium of the Future.” This project will be adjacent to Beijing’s Universal Studios resort in China, traditionally Legacy’s strongest market.

Additionally, the Legacy team is working on several outstanding, as-yet-unannounced experiences and worldwide destinations. This includes an IP-based theme park, a sports park and a safari park, as well as a snow park.

Legacy also recently celebrated the first anniversary of the Chimelong Spaceship’s launch in Zhuhai, China. The Legacy-designed attraction spans 379,000 square metres (4,000,000 square feet). It holds seven Guinness World Records, including the largest aquarium and indoor theme park in the world. The venue also provides a second gate suitable for all weather conditions for the neighbouring Chimelong Ocean Kingdom.

lililillilil, a designer and producer of immersive exhibitions, will also be present at IAAPA Expo 2024.

The company recently shared details of its project to retrofit a vertical raft return conveyor at Aqualibi water park in Wavre, Belgium. The water park’s centrepiece is a slide tower with four unique water roller coasters. At the end of 2023, a vertical raft return conveyor was installed to provide visitors with a memorable and comfortable experience without carrying the cumbersome slide rafts.

Vekoma Rides, the Dutch roller coaster specialist, has announced that Siren’s Curse, a Vekoma Tilt Coaster, is opening next year at Cedar Point. This record-breaking Tilt Coaster combines the firm’s innovative seesaw track element (at 160ft up in the air) with several ride elements, featuring 13 weightless airtime moments, two 360-degree, zero-gravity barrel rolls and a high-speed “triple-down” element with twisted and overbanked track, all through more than 2,966ft of track.
