Hyperia, the UK’s fastest and tallest roller coaster, is to remain closed indefinitely at Thorpe Park in Surrey.
The new ride was shut just one day after opening last month, and was then scheduled to reopen by 8 June. In a new statement, Thorpe Park has said a reopening this weekend is “not going to be possible”.
“Understandably, many of you have been eagerly anticipating further updates and fairly assumed that the 8th June would be the reopening day for the ride,” the park explained. “However, unfortunately that is not going to be possible”.
It added, “We are really sorry for the ongoing disappointment we know this will cause. Rest assured, the teams involved are working very hard to get our golden goddess back up and running as soon as they possibly can – in fact you’ll soon see trains running around the track.”
Hyperia is a family-friendly coaster manufactured by Mack Rides. It reaches a maximum height of 236 feet and speeds of more than 80 mph.
When it reopens, Hyperia will once again replace Thorpe Park’s Stealth as the UK’s fastest coaster, and Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s The Big One as the UK’s tallest.
Hyperia is Thorpe Park’s eighth coaster. It joins other coasters at the park such as Swarm, Colossus, Saw – The Ride, and Nemesis Inferno.

The final piece of track for Hyperia was installed in March. A 500-tonne crane was used by the team at Thorpe Park to lift the 92nd piece into place. In total, the coaster’s assembly process took more than 5,292 man hours.
Thorpe Park said in its new statement that it will “continue to ensure the latest updates are provided via our socials and website as soon as we have news to share”.
Thorpe Park is operated by Merlin Entertainments. The company owns more than 140 attractions in 23 countries.
