Theme parks and museums close as wildfires burn across LA

Visitor attractions in Los Angeles, including Universal Studios Hollywood, have closed as at least five wildfires burn across Southern California.

Per the BBC, five people are confirmed dead and more than 137,000 people have been evacuated amid the most destructive wildfire in LA’s history.

Universal Studios Hollywood closed yesterday (8 January) and has extended its closure to a second day today (9 January.

The park said in a statement: “Out of an abundance of caution, Universal Studios Hollywood and Universal CityWalk will be closed on Thursday, January 9 as a result of the extreme winds and fire conditions.

“As always, the safety of our team members and our guests is our top priority. We continue to assess the situation and are directing guests to visit our website for updates.”

Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood is also closed today due to “continued strong winds and fire conditions”, it said in a statement on the website.

Six Flags Magic Mountain was closed yesterday “due to high winds”, the park said in a statement on social media.

There are at least five fires raging in the LA area and nearby regions, the BBC reports. Palisades, the first fire to break out, is the biggest in the region.

The second biggest fire is Eaton in the northern part of LA. Other fires are Hurst, located north of San Fernando, Lidia in the Acton area north of LA, and Sunset in Hollywood Hills. The Woodley and Olivas fires have now been contained.

As for museums and galleries in the region, the Getty Villa in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood closed yesterday after “some trees and vegetation on site” caught fire.

The Getty Villa will be closed through 13 January. The Getty Center is also shut until 12 January.

Other institutions closed to the public in Los Angeles include the Hammer Museum and MOCA Grand Avenue.
