The Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM), a not-for-profit organisation that brings together professionals, organisations, institutions and service providers from the museum sector, has opened registration for Building Museums 2025, which is taking place in Missouri, US from 5 to 7 March 2025.

Last year saw a highly successful symposium with record-breaking attendance. MAAM is dedicated to the ongoing development of the conference experience and has announced several significant improvements for the 2025 event.

Enhanced programme

Building Museums 2025 will feature:

  • More sessions. This year’s extended programme of breakout sessions will make use of an additional, fifth breakout room.
  • More in-depth workshops. Building on the success of the Ready, Aim, Build (RAB) workshops, the event will feature RAB 2.0, three advanced seminars that delve deeper into individual RAB subjects. Space is limited, so early registration is recommended and is available following a conference booking.
  • New keynote format. The keynote on day 2 (6 March) will include a moderated session with two expert speakers. They will share their insights in focused presentations on sustainability and accessibility.
  • Networking opportunities. On day 3 (7 March) attendees are invited to meet over breakfast and explore 11 discussion topics in small groups. These tables offer a peer-to-peer forum for open conversations and shared experiences.
  • Streamlined schedule. Following the small group sessions, “Lessons Learned” will present a panel discussing insights from recent projects. Day 2 (6 March) will now end at 4:30 pm, with an earlier Exhibitor’s Reception, and day 3 (7 March) concludes at 4:00 pm. Delegates are advised to plan to stay for the entire conference.
  • No printed schedule. In order to be more sustainable, MAAM will use the digital conference app Sched, to provide precise schedule and location information.

The preliminary schedule can be viewed here. In addition to the content programme, exhibitors will be located in gathering areas near session rooms and the ballroom.

The conference will also feature the Ready, Aim, Build Workshop on Wednesday 5 March. This full-day session has a limited capacity of 40 attendees and is designed specifically for museum professionals.

In this workshop, a multidisciplinary team of museum professionals will give a roadmap of best practices for museum capital projects, based on lessons learned from decades of experience. These industry experts in institutional planning, design, engineering, costing, and construction will guide attendees through the critical steps of a successful capital project, from inception to opening day and beyond, using a combination of presented content, targeted activities, and open dialogue.

The Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums’ annual meeting took place from 8 to 10 October 2024 in Philadelphia. This event provided delegates with professional development, special events, and the opportunity to network with other museum professionals.
