Former Walt Disney Imagineer Ann Morrow Johnson has joined architecture and design firm Gensler to lead its entertainment and experience practice.

Johnson previously served as Walt Disney Imagineering’s global head of creative development. The Disney division is responsible for designing and developing the company’s theme parks, rides and attractions.

At Gensler, Johnson’s new title is design director and global entertainment leader. She will partner with Lexi Barry as co-leaders of the practice across the world.

Johnson brings to the role decades of experiential innovation in the theatre, culture and entertainment sectors.

She joins Bob Weis, former president of Walt Disney Imagineering, who is now Gensler’s entertainment leader.

Weis stepped down as president of Imagineering in 2021 and was replaced by Barbara Bouza. He left Disney in 2022 after 42 years with the company.

“Ann Morrow Johnson is the creative leader the Gensler entertainment practice needs at this moment as we continue to see exciting growth and momentum,” said Weis.

“Her extensive global experience in immersive experience design and storytelling, coupled with a solid foundation in development strategy and architecture makes her one of the industry’s most sought-after leaders,” he added.

Designing immersive experiences

“As Gensler continues to influence the world with innovative design, I am confident that Ann Morrow will be an integral part of our future success.”

For Disney, Johnson has led more than 60 major projects in the US, Europe and Asia, and oversaw the Disneyland portfolio. She has created resorts, live shows, restaurants, exhibits, rides and attractions.

“Her focus on emerging trends and technologies to forge emotional connection generates experiences that immerse and resonate,” Gensler said in a press release.

When Weis was hired by Gensler last year, the firm said a demand for immersive experiences is greater than ever.
