Dimension, a leading real-time production studio for visionary storytellers, has launched Dimension Live, a new division devoted to elevating live experiences.

By drawing on the studio’s expertise in virtual production for film and TV, Dimension Live will explore new creative and technical possibilities for live events, such as music and stage performances, virtual concerts, live attractions, and location-based entertainment (LBE).

The team offers comprehensive and customised services, including concept development, real-time visualisation, technical design, content production, and on-site implementation. Additionally, its development and delivery are more economical and efficient than conventional industry approaches, as the division takes advantage of the studio’s industry-leading real-time workflows in virtual production.

Simon Windsor, co-CEO and co-founder of Dimension Studio, says: “Dimension has a rich, innovative history in live and immersive entertainment. Over the past decade, our team have delivered exciting ‘firsts’ for artists including Coldplay, Madonna, and Sam Smith, and inspired audiences through our 3D and holographic work at visitor attractions and events.

“Led by Mark Bustard, our new Live division builds on this work, bringing the magic and latest benefits of real-time technologies to the world of live events.”

The Live team will collaborate with event producers, agencies, operators, and rights-holders to create innovative experiences that engage audiences in new ways.

“Thanks to our expertise in virtual production, what Dimension Live offers is an incredibly unique service for clients and partners across the live events industry,” says Bustard, executive producer for Live. “We are bringing the power and agility of real-time technologies to the design and delivery of new concepts that create the highest-quality experiences for audiences looking to be entertained on a whole other level.”

Real-time systems for live shows

One of Dimension Live’s first collaborations is with HERE at Outernet, a brand-new live events venue located in London’s new Outernet area. As a result of this ongoing partnership, a photorealistic digital twin of the space has been created, complete with real-time lighting and content shown on the venue’s LED screen. The Dimension Live team has been working with HERE to continuously test its real-time live show systems.

When HERE at Outernet presented four nights of performances by electronic musician Floating Points, joined by harpist Miriam Adefris, the Live team had an opportunity to showcase its approach. For the first time in a live performance, Dimension offered real-time virtual lighting and a digital extension of the venue that the audience could view on the LED volume.

By demonstrating some of the capabilities of real-time, this project gave an insight into how it will deliver the next generation of live performances.

This world-first show was delivered in close collaboration with creative studio Hamil Industries, with Akiko Nakayama performing on stage. Lighting and stage design was by Will Potts and Ed Warren, with photography by Genevieve Reeves. The show was promoted by Eat Your Own Ears.

Dimension is a creative partner for virtual productions and advanced virtual humans, with experience working on blockbuster films, live events, and immersive moonshots. The company boasts the world’s largest and most experienced real-time staff outside of gaming, with studios in the UK and US, and global operations.
