The Science Museum is now extending its multi-year transformation to the ground-floor galleries with the addition of three new spaces.
Since 2014, more than 60 percent of the Science Museum’s footprint has been renewed via a £100 million investment. In that time, 11 free new galleries and two permanent interactive spaces have opened.
Ian Blatchford, director and chief executive of the Science Museum, said: “Through the imagination and dedication of extraordinary colleagues and our board of trustees we have achieved much, but our focus is firmly on the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead, not least in delivering these new galleries at the Science Museum, which will inspire and excite our visitors during this decade and beyond.”

The museum‘s new galleries are called Space (opening in autumn 2025), Tomorrow: The Bennett Gallery (opening in early 2027), and Ages of Invention (opening before 2030).
Guests will learn about space exploration, the scientific research that will change the future, and the innovations that have shaped our present.
The new Space gallery will replace the current Exploring Space gallery, which is to undergo a four-month phased closure after the Easter holidays.
Highlights in this gallery include artefacts like an RL10 rocket engine, the radio headset used by Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong to speak to Mission Control, and a three-billion-year-old piece of the Moon.
Tender for Ages of Invention gallery
Tomorrow: The Bennett Gallery features three sections – human, planet and universe. The planet area, for example, will explore solutions for tackling plastic pollution and building more environmentally-friendly houses.
Finally, the Ages of Invention gallery will feature the most significant display of objects from the history of science, technology and engineering anywhere in the world.
A fundraising drive is underway for this gallery, and an open competition to design it launched on 31 January.
Architectural and exhibition design practices are invited to submit first-stage tender returns by 18 February via the Science Museum’s tenders website.
