Merlin Entertainments is enhancing accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing guests at its attractions across the UK.

The UK-based operator has partnered with SignLive to offer sign language services at its sites via mobile devices. This includes instant access to British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters.

These sign language services are coming to Merlin’s UK attractions, including Legoland Windsor, Thorpe Park, Alton Towers, the London Eye, Warwick Castle, and Sea Life aquariums.

“At Merlin, inclusivity is not just a commitment; it’s a key part of our mission to be the greatest place to work and play,” said Kate McBirnie, UK accessibility manager at Merlin.

“Our partnership with SignLive underscores our pursuit of breaking down barriers and ensuring that every guest, regardless of their abilities, can fully enjoy the magic of our attractions.

“This partnership represents a pivotal moment in our ongoing commitment to foster a world where accessibility is a shared goal for all.”

Fiona Mackay, chief operating officer at SignLive, added: “Together, we’re taking significant strides towards making each experience more inclusive for deaf visitors.

“We’re proud to be part of this initiative and look forward to seeing the important impact it can have for attractions’ guest experience in the future.”

Merlin has worked with colleagues with lived experience to develop its accessibility strategy. One of these workers is Andrew Baillie, a moulder in the Merlin Magic Making division.

“Embracing accessibility is so important and SignLive has been instrumental in granting me newfound independence in my personal and professional life,” he said.

Motiongate Dubai has also teamed up with technology company Amsaan to provide a deaf-accessible experience.

“This initiative showcases the power of technology and is a step toward a more inclusive world,” said Alanood Al Hashemi, vice president of organisational culture and impact at Dubai Holding Entertainment.
