Efteling in the Netherlands has unveiled plans for its 31st fairytale, ‘The Princess and the Pea’, in the Fairytale Forest.
Opening in spring 2025, ‘The Princess and the Pea’ experience is based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen in which a princess spends the night in a bed with 20 mattresses and 20 blankets – and a pea hidden right at the bottom.
Work on ‘The Princess and the Pea’ fairytale at Efteling will begin this autumn. The new attraction will be located in front of the Efteling Grand Hotel.
Between 1963 and 2017, Efteling displayed only the pea from the story in the theme park. This was on view on a cushion in the Efteling Museum.
Head designer and manager of Efteling’s design and experience department, Sander de Bruijn, used a sketch by Anton Pieck as inspiration for the new fairytale scene.
“His working method and perfection are still the starting point for new designs in the World of Efteling,” he said.
“To highlight something small in the foreground, Anton Pieck often placed a grand backdrop behind it. We also apply that principle here.
“The impressive hotel forms a perfect backdrop for the gazebo, which is actually a royal annex of the Efteling Grand Hotel. With the same style elements and design, that connection is immediately made, and the link with overnight stays becomes extra applicable.”
New fairytale opens in 2025
The last fairytale to be introduced at Efteling was in 2019. This is based on The Six Swans by the Brothers Grimm and is the park’s first fairytale to offer a ride experience.
Opened in 1952, Efteling has welcomed more than 130 million visitors to date. It has grown to become one of Europe’s top theme parks.
In more news, construction is underway on Efteling’s new hotel, and the park has topped out its new Danse Macabre attraction.
