Legoland Windsor’s new Woodland Village is Merlin Entertainments‘ first carbon neutral accommodation, the UK-based operator has announced.

Opening on 24 May, the Legoland Woodland Village includes 150 lodges and camping barrels, as well as an on-site restaurant and a family entertainment hub.

It is Merlin‘s first accommodation site to achieve the official verification of carbon neutral from UK-based consultancy, the Carbon Trust. The Woodland Village’s operational energy will be free of fossil fuels on opening, achieved through a carbon reduction plan.

“We are thrilled to be opening our first operationally carbon-neutral accommodation,” said Dare Ilori, group director of sustainability at Merlin.

“This marks a significant milestone in our sustainability journey, demonstrating Merlin’s firm commitment to reducing its environmental impact.

“This development will provide a blueprint for other resorts, as we strive to continuously reduce our carbon footprint across our global estate and lead the way in implementing new practices and working methods.”

Ahead of the opening, model makers at Legoland Windsor have been busy creating Lego creatures to go on display in the £35 million holiday village.

Thousands of Lego bricks have been used to make animals including miniature rabbits, red kites, ducks and ducklings.

Helen Bull, divisional director at Legoland Windsor, said the resort’s new holiday village “is set to bring thousands of UK and international visitors to Windsor, which will undoubtedly be a major boost to travel and tourism to the local area”.

Earlier this year, Legoland Windsor launched its new Minifigure Speedway coaster, the park’s fastest coaster to date. Part of the experience is the world’s tallest Lego Minifigure.

Operated by Merlin Entertainments, Legoland Windsor is home to more than 50 rides, attractions, live shows, building workshops and driving shows, as well as more than 80 million Lego bricks.
