The Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM), a not-for-profit organisation that brings together professionals, organisations, institutions and service providers from the museum sector, is calling for session proposals for the MAAM Building Museums Symposium.

Museum and allied building design and construction professionals are invited to submit a session proposal by 16 September. The symposium committee is calling for a diverse range of impactful presentations which share “real-world” experiences, such as project obstacles, errors, and achievements, as well as budget and scheduling details.

Showcasing museum capital projects

The national Building Museums symposium is taking place from 5 to 7 March 2025 in St. Louis, Missouri. It will discuss the process, potential, and risks of planning and managing museum capital building projects. Museum leaders, architects, and planners working on new building, expansion, and refurbishment projects will gather for the three-day event, which will include keynote speeches, breakout sessions, a full day of workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, and social activities.

The symposium is organised around three interconnected topics – vision, implementation, and sustainability (or life beyond opening). Each day’s content will represent these themes across a wide range of museum sizes and scales, budgets, project scopes, and disciplines, as well as both collecting and non-collecting institutions.

In addition, MAAM will soon open nominations for the Buildy Awards. Eligible projects include museums and similar facilities at zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and visitor centres serving public sites. The facilities must have been completed between 2018 and 2023 and open to the public for at least a year before the award submission deadline on 30 September 2024.

Entry is open to projects worldwide, which may consist of new construction, extensions, renovations, or a combination of these. MAAM advises that impact and quality are more important considerations than size and budget. Previously unawarded entrants from the past five years may resubmit with an updated nomination form.

In other news, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums’ annual meeting will take place from 8 to 10 October 2024 in Philadelphia. This event provides delegates with professional development, special events, and the opportunity to network with other museum professionals.
