Universal Studios Hollywood is bringing back 1974’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre for this year’s Halloween Horror Nights.

The haunted house was announced at the Midsummer Scream horror convention on Sunday (28 July) by Halloween Horror Nights creative director John Murdy.

In the new maze, called ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Legacy of Leatherface’, guests will “fall victim to Leatherface and his cannibalistic kin as they lure you into their gore-filled slaughterhouse in a gruesome original story”, Halloween Horror Nights wrote on X.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been at Halloween Horror Nights before, but this year’s version celebrates the 1974 film’s 50th anniversary.

It joins three other haunted houses based on major film franchises at the next Halloween Horror Nights. These are inspired by Insidious, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, and A Quiet Place.

Also at the California park this year are original haunted houses titled Dead Exposure: Death Valley, Monstruos 2: The Nightmares of Latin America and Universal Monsters: Eternal Bloodlines.

Elsewhere, Six Flags Great Adventure’s Halloween event for 2024 includes a new experience themed to Netflix and Legendary Entertainment’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022).

In more news, Universal is creating a year-round horror attraction inspired by Halloween Horror Nights for Area15 in Las Vegas. The new location is Universal’s first permanent horror experience outside of its parks.

In a recent interview with blooloop, Murdy said of the growing demand for horror experiences: “It’s high thrills. We’ll just stand at the exit of one of our haunted houses and just watch what happens. It’s a great way to experience how your guests are enjoying the experience. You’ll see people come out and they’re screaming and then they immediately start laughing. To me, that’s the classic release of adrenaline.”

Halloween Horror Nights begins on 30 August at Universal Orlando, and on 5 September at Universal Studios Hollywood.
