Adirondack Studios (ADKS), a company that provides creative solutions for designers, artists, producers, and owners across the themed entertainment industry, has shared details of its work for local community attractions.

The firm is known for working with some of Orlando’s most loved theme parks. However, its 5,800-square-meter studio in Florida serves a range of businesses. The firm has recently completed projects for two very different Orlando venues, and upcoming projects span a wide range of local and regional projects.

SAK Comedy Lab

ADKS was recently appointed by SAK Comedy Lab, a leading improv comedy theatre. Together with McCree General Contractors, the firm delivered the lobby, ticket area, and stage set theming for a brand-new 175-seat location in the centre of Downtown Orlando.

SAK was founded 46 years ago and has introduced iconic performers such as Wayne Brady, as well as actors and writers for shows like The Office and Saturday Night Live. The new venue represents its largest capital investment to date.

ADKS collaborated with SAK to develop a design which transformed the lobby and theatre into gritty, lively, and quirky streetscapes which include Easter eggs and references to the company’s history. One of the project’s highlights is the bespoke faux brick wallcovering that extends through the lobby and into the theatre. Additional details include hand-painted colour splashes throughout the brick and previous SAK logos rendered as ghost graphics.

The set has shown to be a noteworthy combination of form and function that meets SAK’s specific requirements for its distinctive performances.

Chris Dinger, executive director, SAK Comedy Lab Executive Director, says: “From concept to completion, ADKS was a pleasure to collaborate with. Our vision was brought to life by some really talented and friendly people. We are taking great pleasure in showing off the new SAK Comedy Lab!”

Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab at Give Kids the World Village

ADKS Florida’s next project was Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab at Give Kids the World Village (GKTW). Give Kids the World Village is an 89-acre nonprofit resort in Florida that gifts week-long wish vacations to children with critical illnesses and their families from all over the world. Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab is an immersive, accessible STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and maths) activity centre that seeks to encourage curiosity, promote teamwork, and inspire childlike wonder.

ADKS’ delivered a complete refurbishment and rethinking of an existing facility. The firm served as general contractor for the project’s subcontractors, while also cooperating with specialist lighting designers and other artisans and builders. It constructed and installed the Wonderbots, Brilliance Bottler, interactive activities, and theming throughout WonderLab’s six unique areas, which brought to life the vision of project partner MigaMe Inc.

Christie Miga, manager of Experiential Education at GKTW, comments: “We were thrilled to have worked with Adirondack Studios on Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab. We so appreciated their incredible attention to detail and intentionality in design. They are an exceptional group of creatives who are not only amazingly knowledgeable and collaborative, but a blast to work with on a project.”

Since its launch, Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab has enthralled visitors, with many returning five or six times throughout their visit.

The Center Orlando

The Florida ADKS team hopes to build on the success of SAK Comedy Lab and Mayor Clayton’s WonderLab. It has several new local and regional projects coming up, including work for The Center Orlando. This organisation promotes and empowers the LGBT community in the city by providing information, education, support, and advocacy.

For this year’s Pride Month, ADKS’ employee resource group selected a community project that would have a longer-lasting impact. Clayton Altman, general manager of ADKS Florida, contacted George Wallace, CEO of The Center Orlando, to ask if their team could help.

Wallace says: “Just that week we had developed Out Con Orlando, a queer pop culture event. Clayton met with our team and the rest is history!  We are so excited to be working with such an amazing team to create one-of-a-kind signature pieces for Out Con Orlando.”

Out Con will take place on 1 and 2 November. ADKS’ donation will include eight pieces of comic-book-inspired artwork and a dimensional “Rainbow Wave” logo.

Make a Scene

Adirondack Studios has operated a studio in Orlando since 2017. Its newest location launched in February 2023, and is well-positioned to serve projects of all sizes with expertise including creative design, technical design, scenic painting, carpentry, metalwork, and installation. It boasts ceiling heights of over 10 metres, 20 loading bays, and a new paint booth. However, the real key to its success lies in its 65-strong team.

Jessie Shur, production art director, ADKS Florida, says: “Yes, we love creating high-profile projects for the ‘big names’ in Orlando and around the world. It has given us a steady pipeline of work and created a name for us in the industry.

“But I think you can see from the diversity of projects we have done and are doing this year – a comedy club, a STEAM-based activity center, and artwork for an LGBTQIA+ convention – that we truly love any project that will inspire our team to flex their creativity, artistry, innovation and skillset.”

The team’s upcoming local and regional projects include a number of mini-golf courses, décor for restaurants and stores, and several significant IP-based theme park and FEC attractions which are under NDAs.

Altman concludes: “I definitely feel that the Orlando team is embodying the spirit of our new company ethos, ‘Make A Scene’.

“After moving into our current facility 18 months ago, we are on track to double the previous year’s revenue. Our long term plans are to continue growing at a steady rate while adding more equipment and rounding out our talented team. The goal is to expand our capabilities to best serve clients of all sizes, markets, and types throughout the region and beyond.”

Representatives from Adirondack Studios will be attending IAAPA Meetup: EPCOT, IAAPA APAC Summit, SATE Asia, the Boston TEA Party – A TEA Explores Event, the TEA Trade Mission to Hong Kong, IAAPA Expo Europe, SATE North America, IAAPA Expo, and MAPIC.

Adirondack Studios (ADKS) recently revealed MAKE A SCENE, its new company culture, recruitment and employee recognition programme in which its team members take on key roles.
