Top events, education sessions & exhibitors at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024

IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 will take place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, from 23 to 27 September, with the trade show floor open from 24 to 26 September. The event, organised by IAAPA, the global association for the attractions industry, will be hosted by the RAI Convention Center in the city centre.

Throughout the event, there will be a variety of education sessions. This includes workshops and panel discussions as well as insightful presentations from industry leaders. In addition, networking events will enable professionals to meet, exchange ideas, and build valuable connections. Meanwhile, over 650 exhibitors will be on the 18,500-square-metre trade show floor. They will demonstrate a range of innovative products, services, and solutions.

Pre-conference tours and sessions

Several ticketed events are taking place before the conference starts. This includes the IAAPA Institute for Attractions Professionals on Saturday 21 September and the IAAPA Safety Institute on Sunday 22 September.

Meanwhile, Monday 23 September has a full schedule of ticketed EDUTours, such as the Water Park Day, Safety Day and Sustainability Day. During the Indoor Entertainment Day, Graham Speak from Speak Consulting will present a session on IP partnerships, brand collaborations and retail propositions.

There are also trips to Efteling, Avonturenboerderij Molenwaard and local science centres and edutainment venues.

Then, the IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 begins in earnest on Tuesday 24 September with the opening ceremony at 9 am. This will include performances honouring Dutch culture, such as traditional music and dance acts that reflect The Netherlands’ rich legacy. Throughout IAAPA Expo Europe 2024, Amsterdam’s culture and history will seamlessly blend with the Dutch leisure sector. This unique experience is designed to inspire delegates with a combination of tradition and innovation. 

The show floor opens after the opening ceremony, at 10 am.

Top picks from the IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 agenda

Educational sessions throughout the week cover a wide range of topics. For instance, sustainability, guest experience, AI, storytelling, health and safety, immersive technologies and much more. Here are some of the highlights from a packed agenda.

Tuesday 24 September

One session not to miss on Tuesday morning is Kick-off: One Year Since Vienna—What are the Hot Trends, Topics, and Gossip? A panel of industry experts will share insights on what lies ahead for the attractions industry in the coming year. They will also link key topics to sessions later in the week. In one opening session, attendees can gain valuable market insights and build their personalised conference schedule for the week.

The panellists will be Yael Coifman of Leisure Development Partners, Bart Dohmen from TDAC BV, Charles Read, managing director of blooloop, Paul Moreton of Merlin Entertainments and IAAPA’s Jakob Wahl.

A series of Sponsor Spotlights follows. Firstly, Ben Thompson of Storyland Studios will speak in Storyland Studios, Inc. – Secrets of Storytelling. Any attraction can increase its appeal by using storytelling to guide decisions about strategy, interaction, and layout. Thompson will share the secrets of good storytelling and will also give examples of experiences driven by compelling narratives.

Storibox – Disruptive Changes in Experience Photography will be led by Mike Weber of Storibox. He will run through the changes that have happened in experience photography since its initial launch in the 80s. He will also explore current challenges and future potential in the industry.

Özgür Küçükateş from DOF Robotics will then lead DOF Robotics – Next-Gen Amusement: How AI and DOF Robotics Are Transforming Attractions. This will provide insights into how AI is currently applied in the amusement industry. It will also spotlight how DOF Robotics is leveraging AI to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the sector.

Competitive socialising, multi-sensory attractions, and a commitment to sustainability

Social Entertainment and Competitive Socialising: The New Trend promises to be an interesting session. In our increasingly digital world, location-based entertainment (LBE) excels in fostering real-world connections. But what if the future of social interaction lies not in escaping technology but in embracing it socially?

The impact of emotional engagement in creating unparalleled visitor experiences will then be explored in The Fifth Sense – Multisensory Experience: Elevating Attractions with Smell, Sound, and Visuals to the Next Level.

In this session, Walt Disney Imagineering’s Michel den Dulk, Monty Lunde of Technifex, Elke Kies from Magic Box, Lewis Brown of Brown Creative and Simon Spitzbart from Fantasiana will reveal the secrets behind designing attractions that not only entertain but also evoke strong emotional reactions, making every visit more memorable and shareable. 

Then, Andreas Andersen from Liseberg and João Fiães from BUAS will speak in How Future-Proof is the European Attractions and Theme Parks Industry’s Commitment to Sustainability? Continuing the sustainability theme, Sarner International’s Ed Cookson will talk with Dr Susanne Nawrath in Sustainability at Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost.

Artificial Intelligence and insights from CEOs

In the afternoon, Andreu Tobella Brunet of PortAventura World will lead AI—the Present. This will be a session on practical solutions for industry professionals.

This year’s IAAPA CEO Talk follows, where industry leaders share their innovative strategies and groundbreaking initiatives. The panel includes Reinoud van Assendelft de Coningh of Van Assendelft en Partners, Consultant Leisure & Culture, Europa-Park’s Michael Mack, Zeina Dagher of Dubai Holding Entertainment, and Scott O’Neil of Merlin Entertainments.

Verónica Celis-Vergara from Maurer Rides will lead a session called Sustainable Innovations for Manufacturers and Suppliers. In this session, attendees can learn how Maurer Rides works toward a more sustainable future in the attractions industry.

Smart Parks: Leveraging Digital Tools for Unforgettable Experiences will show how both theme parks and zoos can leverage digital tools to create personalised, interactive, and seamless visitor experiences. The panellists are Jeff Havlik from PGAV Destinations, Óscar García Oltra of Parques Reunidos, and Sarah Venning from Merlin Entertainments.

Co-creation and Middle East sports entertainment

Later on Tuesday, Heather Doggett of Immerse Universe, Daniel Kerscher, and Raven Sun Creative‘s Louis Alfieri will speak in Co-Creation – What is it and how can we prepare our audiences, teams, and facilities to leverage this game-changing paradigm in experiential entertainment?

This will explore the paradigm change in the role of the audience from passive observer to active participant. Attendees will learn how to deploy this active audience role in their experiences, teams, and facilities. They will also understand the pros and cons and what to look out for in designing and delivering these types of experiences throughout the entire project life cycle, from design to daily operation.

Game On: Integrating Sports into the Middle Eastern Leisure and Entertainment Experience includes insights from Faisal Al Dossary of Dyno Climbing Center, Olivia Wyrick from Aquarabia Water Theme Park, Dr Ray Tinston of Identity Middle East, H.E. Omar Faisal Alhegelan of the Saudi Arabian Olympic Committee, and Travis Kline from The Royal Commission for AlUla.

Then Strandzuid, a waterside restaurant at the back of RAI Amsterdam, will host the opening reception in the evening. It offers outdoor seating with a view of the RAI harbour and various international dishes, finger foods, and drinks.

Wednesday 25 September

Wednesday at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 begins with the ticketed Leadership Breakfast. This is an exclusive event for C-suite executives in the attractions industry. It will examine the challenges as well as innovative solutions shaping the sector. Speakers this year are Jean Gelissen, general manager of Toverland and Gerro Vonk, director at Driestar Investments.

Events and nostalgia

One session to note on Wednesday morning is TEA Presents – Designing Experiences Beyond Opening Hours. This will discuss how attractions increasingly offer both before- and after-hours openings to maximise the use of their venues and expand upon the range of experiences available to guests.

The panellists, Edd Musgrove of Themedd Europe, Henk Janssen from Toverland, Danielle Tato of RWS Global, and Kieran Stanley from dan pearlman, will look at how to design for these nighttime and early-morning pre-opening experiences, ensuring they stay true to an outstanding guest experience.

Elsewhere, Can We Innovate While Honouring Tradition? will explore the delicate balance between modernising and maintaining nostalgic charm. Attendees will hear from Laura Baxter of Blackgang Chine, Morgan Fix from BoldMove Nation, Travis Kline of The Royal Commission for AlUla, Andy Hygate from Blackpool Pleasure Beach, and Dominic Wray of Vectis Ventures.

Then, Eric J. O’Rourke of FORREC will join Ida Troive from Parks and Resorts Scandinavia, Bryan Adams of Ph.Creative, Hisham AlAali from Aquarabia – Qiddiya City, Simon Spitzbart of Fantasiana, and Hind Galadari of Miral Experiences in The Power of a Strong Employer Brand. Next is CEO TALK II, a new addition to IAAPA Expo Europe 2024. This will explore the leadership journeys of three CEOs who have recently taken the helm of their companies. CEO Talk II is an opportunity to gain an insider’s view of the real-world experiences and leadership philosophies shaping the industry landscape. The speakers are Carl Lenaerts of Plopsa Group, Anne-Mart Agerbeek from Vekoma, and Wouter Dekkers of Momentum Leisure.

In the afternoon, Maximising Revenue and Engagement: Expanding Water Park Operations to Include Night Events will present concrete strategies for navigating the unique challenges of nighttime operations. It will include insights from Jeremy Gray of WhiteWater, Leander de Wit and Olivia Wyrick from Aquarabia Water Theme Park, Roel Van Den Berk of Ocean Park Corporation, and Daan Duijm from Qiddiya.

Attendees can also dive into the forefront of immersive entertainment with Matt Dawson, RWS Global, in Trends in Immersive Entertainment.

In Dark Rides: now, wow and awe Experiences, Dr Wim Strijbosch and Dr Pieter Cornelis will explain how their three years of intensive scientific research on dark rides translate into practical implications. The presentation will include key components shaping the dark ride experience, including emotion, imagery, and narrative-related states such as narrative transportation, presence and flow.

Guest flow and future-proofing attractions

Delegates will learn how to shorten queues by effectively shifting attendance from busy days to quieter ones, enhancing the overall guest experience in Mastering Flow: Strategies for Capacity and Queue Management. They can also learn practical techniques and tools to balance crowd distribution and maximise operational efficiency. Panellists include Michael Höfig from Movie Park Germany, David Jungmann of accesso, Neil Wilson from Universal Verification Ltd, and Egbert de Jong of Walibi Holland.

Future-Proofing Attractions: Digital Transformation Exchange is presented by ReWork’s Sarah Bagg. This will allow attendees to come together to explore the timely topic of digital transformation. The goal is for participants to gain fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, as well as practical solutions they can implement in their work.

Landscaping, a crucial element often overshadowed by rides, attractions and other elements in a leisure park, is also on the agenda on Wednesday afternoon. How Green Landscaping Shapes Guest Experience, Brand Extension, and Climate Resilience will tackle sometimes controversial statements about landscaping and unlock new perspectives. The speakers are Cale Heit of FORREC, Carl Vergauwe from Studio Plopsa, Pieter van den Berk from Van den Berk Nurseries, and TDAC’s Bart Dohmen.

Wednesday afternoon also offers more ticketed EDUTours. These include Culture and Art—It’s all about Rembrandt, Amsterdam city experiences, and an F&B tour.

The IAAPA Foundation Charity Action is also scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Attendees can bid on exclusive theme park experiences. All money raised will support the IAAPA Foundation Charity for Future Talent. IAAPA will match all contributions to this cause. The auction includes lots from Efteling, PortAventura World, Walibi Belgium, Parc Astérix, Holiday Park, Toverland, Blackgang Chine, and IAAPA EMEA.

The Zoo and Aquarium Reception, Middle East Reception, Supervisors and Team Leaders Reception, and Young Professionals Reception will all take place in the evening.

Thursday 26 September

Interesting sessions on Thursday morning at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024 include IAAPA Research and Investment Analysis: Do the Numbers Justify the Investment?

Based on robust IAAPA research, this session will help attendees navigate demographic and tourism statistics, avoiding common analytical pitfalls. It will dissect project success components from investment planning to operations, offering benchmark ranges for the entertainment, wildlife, and education/museums sectors. Speakers include Kelly Repass of IAAPA, Jos Klerx from Rabobank, Mark Wijman from AEDP, and Linda Zou of Merlin Entertainments.

This year’s Iconic Ride Spotlight session is about Symbolica at Efteling. The team behind this beloved attraction will talk about its creation, design, and operation. The panellists are Efteling’s Jaap den Bleker, Sander de Bruijn, Hein Oomen, and Stan Dingemans.

In the afternoon, Ashley Fletcher of Rollover Ltd, James Barlow of Rainbow Productions, Lennard Otto from Global Leisure & Entertainment, Terry Monkton of Simworx and Annabel Rochfort from Blacklist Experiences will present A Holistic Approach to LBE.

In the afternoon, ticketed events include an EDUTour to Artis Zoo, the Food and Beverage Reception, and the new Leisure and Holiday Parks Reception.

Aardman collaborates with Wild in Art to offer Find the Flock. This is a licensed trail package of decorated Shaun the Sheep sculptures, to venues and attractions.

This draws tourists and encourages families and kids to explore with their favourite characters. Stratford Cross’s Royal Entomological Society Insect Garden attracts families and insect enthusiasts with the Lloyd of the Flies Bug Hunt app, allowing users to ‘shrink’ to fly size and experience the world through insect eyes. A Wallace & Gromit interactive AR trail experience: All Systems Go is also in production. .

This summer, accesso collaborated with the Philadelphia Museum of Art to enhance the visitor experience at the Mary Cassatt at Work exhibition. The museum uses accesso’s acclaimed LoQueue virtual queueing system to accommodate the enormous demand for entry to the exhibition. This means that visitors do not need to stand in long queues. Instead, they can explore the museum while waiting to see this important collection of works by the famed Pennsylvania-born artist.

ART Engineering – booth #11005

ART Engineering, an amusement ride manufacturer that develops roller coasters, dark rides, carousels, water rides and more, will present its latest innovations and projects from this year.

This includes installing four Wild Swings at Tripsdrill, Futuroscope, Family Park and Majaland Gdansk. Additionally, the company completed a family roller coaster at Traumland auf der Bärenhöhle and retrofit projects at Drayton Manor and Nigloland. Here, the team built a new coaster train for a former stand-up coaster and revitalised the monorail.

New projects and products are also on the horizon. For example, ART Engineering recently revealed that its new Family Spike Launch Coaster will open at Potts Park in Minden, Germany, in 2025. BattleKart – booth #8602

BattleKart, which combines physical driving with dynamic AR projection mapping, will also be exhibited at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024. With a patented localisation system and advanced game management software, the karts interact in real-time with both projected scenery and other players. This allows for unique, life-sized video game fun for everybody.

Earlier this year, BattleKart, announced the opening of BattleKart Dubai, marking the firm’s 31st location. BattleKart Dubai is located in a newly built venue in Dubai Investment Park 2 near the city centre and provides an unparalleled gaming and karting experience.

The company also recently launched its new BattleColor game mode. The environment and mood now have a Disco theme. This means the track can become a massive dance floor where players light up as many squares as possible to win the game.

Beckhoff Automation will demonstrate its PC-based control technology and automation software for the entertainment and leisure industries at the show.

Whether it’s a subproject, a series product for entertainment functions, complex theatrical machinery, or a complete theme park, PC-based control from Beckhoff offers reliable, industry-proven technology to help tackle a wide range of creative challenges.

Using a variety of interfaces and communication standards, sceneries can be perfectly illuminated on a fully automatic basis, LED walls can be controlled with pixel precision, or video animations can be moved with the hovering movers of Beckhoff’s XPlanar drive system.

Projects implemented globally in the entertainment industry using Beckhoff technology prove that PC-based control is ideally suited to an industry that strives to surpass itself, or the competition, constantly, to offer new attractions. For example, the company’s technology is being used backstage in Hollywood by Rigging in Motion, a firm that specialises in the automation of stage technology.

It also supports the synchronised movement of the 1,216 glossy, copper-plated aluminium raindrops that form the Kinetic Rain sculpture at Singapore’s Changi Airport. The challenge of moving 1,216 servo axes synchronously was solved using EtherCAT, TwinCAT, and compact Servo Drives in Bus Terminal format.

Balich Wonder Studio

Simone Merico of Balich Wonder Studio, a global entertainment group that creates award-winning ceremonies, brand experiences, immersive shows, and destination experiences, will also attend the show.

Balich Wonder Studio recently partnered with Fondazione Arena di Verona to present an immersive concert with three-dimensional projections to celebrate Antonio Vivaldi‘s iconic Four Seasons, coinciding with the composer’s masterpiece’s 300th anniversary. The show celebrated the music with Fondazione Arena di Verona and state-of-the-art technology from Balich Wonder Studio.

Other notable projects include last year’s family immersive Disney: The Castle festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This was presented by The General Entertainment Authority/Sela Company and produced by Balich Wonder Studio.

Capturelife

Capturelife will be on the ground at IAAPA Expo Europe as the souvenir photo partner for the conference. Attendees can experience the Capturelife platform firsthand by getting their photos taken by one of Capturelife’s official photographers throughout the show. 360Golf reinvents mini-golf by integrating seamless tracking and stroke-counting technology into the golf balls. Holovis 360 golf

The 360Golf experience is now available at two Level X sites in the UK and on Norwegian Cruise Line’s latest ships. Each location is monitored in real time using Holovis’ DeepSmarts data analytics system. This gives operators access to key metrics such as player volumes, game lengths, high scores, and course usage, as well as maintenance reminders and equipment health status.

Holovis is also preparing to launch two of its largest courses to date as part of a series of 11 installations set to open at an undisclosed location later this year. The company promises that these new designs will offer unprecedented ambition and scale in the mini-golf world.

Plus, in July, Drayton Manor introduced Gold Rush, an innovative Family Launch Coaster with a multi-experience layout configuration.

Jora Vision, a leading design and production company, will host three reveal events at its booth during the show. On 24 September at 2 pm, Jora Vision will present the upcoming Enchanted Greenhouse dark ride in Six Flags Qiddiya. Lagotronics Projects, the media-based attractions specialist, will unveil the world’s first Gameplay Theater, scheduled to open in 2025. A press conference detailing this will be held on Tuesday 24 September, from 11:40 a.m. to 12:05 p.m.

CONDUCTR Supercharged Shuffle at EAG Expo

This blend of tradition and technology has proven incredibly popular, with Game Volt recently becoming the largest tech-powered shuffleboard provider globally. It celebrated its 75th installation this month, and over 3 million pucks have been thrown across Supercharged Shuffle installations worldwide.

Simtec Systems, a leader in motion simulation, presents the FUNRIDE motion-based attractions family, interactive dark rides, and the HEXaFLITE and HEXaFLITEmini.

The FUNRIDE OCS TR (On Track) is a special FUNRIDE version. The motion system is mounted on a platform that allows it to move through or into a dome theatre. The combination of 2D or 3D images, motion impressions, and additional special effects such as rain, heat, wind, scent, and seat vibration takes the guest on an unbelievable journey.

Simtec HEXaFLITE4mini

Meanwhile, Simtec’s engineers developed the HEXaFLITEmini to meet the needs of customers with limited space for a flying theatre. They developed it especially for low ceiling heights of approximately six metres. The system is available with an electric or hydraulic 6 DOF motion system. It is ideal for venues such as FECs, museums and cruise ships.

The first HEXaFLITEmini will be part of a major visitor attraction in Malta. Sarner International Ltd and Mercury Towers by Zaha Hadid Architects will bring Malta’s history and beauty to life in a unique new attraction that combines the HEXaFLITEmini flying theatre ride with a dark walk exhibition.

Last year, Simtec Systems also announced the expansion of the Simtec Manufactory at its headquarters in Braunschweig, Germany.

The company opened the Barbie Ultimate Road Trip this summer, in partnership with IP2 Entertainment, at Mission: Play! By Mattel at The Galleria Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi. It also looks forward to numerous upcoming project installations, including a Pegasus Flying Theatre, to a development in Istanbul.

The team also looks forward to installing a custom-project-designed VR attraction in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri. This attraction will feature a narrative-driven experience with a pre-show elevator simulator, motion seats, VR elements, and special effects.

Smeetz – booth #8420

Smeetz, a provider of smart all-in-one ticketing software for leisure and cultural attractions, will also exhibit at IAAPA Expo Europe 2024. The focus will be on the new AI-powered solutions available across the Smeetz solution. The team will present a new product line, an end-to-end Chat agents solution that enables visitor attractions to build and configure their own chatbot agents, that are deployed across their website.

The possibilities are broad, as clients have the possibility to configure customer service-oriented agents, and sales-oriented agents.

Elsewhere, Smeetz has enetered the Belgian market with the rollout of five KoJump sites, a trampoline park franchise. The five Belgian sites launched over six weeks during the summer. An additional site in Paris, had already been operating for a couple of months, allowing the company to fully optimise and prepare before the broader launch.

In addition, Triotech will showcase the SuperBlaster at the Bandai Namco Amusement booth, #8373. This is an interactive coin-op simulator suitable for all ages.

Valo Motion – booth #12250

Valo Motion, a pioneer in combining interactive technology with physical activities, will bring its trio of crowd-pleasing mixed reality attractions to IAAPA Expo Europe 2024. For attendees, this is a chance to try ValoArena, ValoClimb, and ValoJump in person.

Zamperla, a leading ride manufacturer, will showcase its Integrated Rides. It will also highlight two exciting coaster projects set to debut in 2026, in Asia and in Europe.
