What’s believed to be the UK’s smallest museum, located inside a Land Rover Defender SUV, opened at London‘s South Bank last week.
The micro museum was created to celebrate a 70-year partnership between the British Red Cross and Defender, which has seen the humanitarian charity help two million people in more than 50 countries using more than 500 vehicles.
For the museum project, Defender and the British Red Cross commissioned the converted Defender 110, which features artefacts, photos and audio guides to showcase the charity’s work from 1954 to the present day.
Paul Amadi, chief supporter officer at British Red Cross, said: “The enduring partnership between the British Red Cross and Defender has lasted a remarkable 70 years, and over that time has helped over two million people.
“We’re delighted today to launch our mobile museum to tell the story of the partnership and showcase the impact we have had over seven decades. We look forward to the future of our partnership and continuing to be there for communities in crisis.”
Up to five visitors at a time can fit inside the free museum. The outside of the vehicle also offers a visual timeline of the British Red Cross and Defender partnership.
Celebrating British Red Cross’ work
The mobile museum opened at the South Bank observation point last Thursday and Friday, but there are ongoing talks to take it to other locations in the future.
Mark Cameron, managing director at Defender, said: “Since the first model… joined the Red Cross fleet in 1954, the capability of our vehicles has been used to deliver humanitarian aid in conflict and disaster zones around the world.
“The launch of the mobile museum showcases Defender’s capability in a very different way, and we hope it can raise awareness of the invaluable work made possible by our enduring and unique humanitarian partnership.”
