dan pearlman, a leading brand and experience architecture group, has shared how its experience architecture masterplan for Buin Zoo in Chile is enabling the attraction to undergo a pivotal transformation.

The firm has developed a masterplan that will turn the traditional zoo into a biopark by establishing overarching ecosystems across the site. The first phase of this plan was revealed in early October 2024, during Buin Zoo’s 30th anniversary celebration.

Ignacio Idalsoaga, director of Buin Zoo, says: “Our mission is to protect ecosystems. Together with other stakeholders, we aim to work comprehensively toward ecosystem preservation. We want to become a catalyst for many conservation-focused foundations.”

Inspiring active participation

Bioparks are natural or artificial areas dedicated to safeguarding and preserving biodiversity while educating visitors. They allow guests to see species interactions while learning about conservation, ecosystems, and sustainable resource management. The aim is to encourage visitors to think of themselves as active participants in the ecosystem, rather than passive observers.

When the Buin Zoo transformation is completed, the biopark will be home to over 300 animal species, including 40 endangered species, with an emphasis on safeguarding Chile’s native flora. To do this, the zoo will treble in size from 11 to 30 hectares over the next 15 years, and be extensively redesigned.

A geo-ecosystem-based biopark that encourages visitors to participate in conservation must captivate guests with an emotive story which takes them on an engaging, educational journey. This new experience is designed to be a learning adventure that introduces visitors to the delicate yet spectacular beauty of the world’s ecosystems.

The park will be organised into geographic zones and sub-zones that reflect different ecosystems, and species will be located according to their respective habitats. Authentic plant life and cultural features will enrich the experience, and help guests to fully comprehend the interconnected nature of each habitat.

Buin Zoo’s ecologically conscious conversion to a biopark presents the potential for a cutting-edge and engaging visitor experience. Its combination of geographical and biome-based strategies is set to deliver an eco-centric vision.

Earlier this month, the city of Frankfurt and dan pearlman unveiled plans for the future development of Frankfurt Zoo, Germany’s second-oldest zoo.
