The Broad in downtown Los Angeles has broken ground on a $100 million expansion project set to open in 2028.
The new building will significantly increase the number of works on view from the Broad’s collection of contemporary art, and enhance the visitor experience.
Designed by the architects of the original building, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the expansion will also increase gallery space by 70 percent.

Joanne Heyler, founding director and president of The Broad, said: “This new building reinforces a core belief in access to art that has guided The Broad’s approach in our first decade, extends the vibrant experience visitors enjoy today, and introduces entirely new ways for people to engage with the collection.”
Architect Elizabeth Diller said: “I consider these buildings to be siblings, not clones, with a shared DNA but expressing unique characteristics that enhance the visitor’s experience of the pair.”
The expansion “will present new ways for visitors to directly engage with the art in smaller, more focused galleries or through serendipitous encounters with art in storage while preserving the intuitive logic of the original museum“, she said.
Construction on the new buidling begins as The Broad enters its 10th anniversary year and continues to welcome close to a million visitors annually.
Gallery space to grow by 70%
In March, the museum achieved the highest single-day attendance in its history, welcoming more than 6,800 people.
“It has been wonderful to see so many people enjoying art at The Broad,” said Edythe Broad, co-founder of The Broad.
Referring to her late husband Eli Broad, she added: “It has succeeded beyond my and Eli’s wildest dreams.
“Expanding the museum reflects our belief in the importance of art as a resource for everyone and in the vision Eli and I shared for Los Angeles as a world art capital.”

The Broad’s collection contains more than 2,000 works of art from the 1950s to today.
Artists on view in the institution include Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jeff Koons, Barbara Kruger, Roy Lichtenstein, Takashi Murakami, Cindy Sherman, Kara Walker, and Andy Warhol.
With the extra gallery space, The Broad will be able to showcase artworks never previously displayed, while a unique art storage experience will allow guests to explore painting racks on the second floor of the expansion.
Founded in 2015, The Broad offers free general admission and presents a programme of special exhibitions and innovative live events.
