Wavegarden, a leading manufacturer of artificial wave-generating systems, has worked with URBNSURF to create a new surf park at Sydney Olympic Park, Australia, following the success of their first surf park in Melbourne. The attraction, now open to visitors, is Australia’s second Wavegarden Cove surf park and the eighth in the world.

This second project in Sydney was developed with €46 million from the URBNSURF group. The new facility has a 46-module Wavegarden Cove, two restaurants, a surf school, a leisure pool, a skate park, a surf shop, and a wellness centre. Australia is the only country in the world with two Wavegarden surf parks accessible to the public.

“The fact that our customers like URBNSURF are opening their 2nd facility and are satisfied with our technology is the best endorsement for our business can have,” says Josema Odriozola, CEO and founder of Wavegarden. “It enables us to keep growing and continue adding value to communities and bringing surfing closer to everyone.”

Versatile tech offers more accessible surfing

Due to the adaptability of the Spanish technology, beach and surf resorts catering to all levels of expertise are now possible.

The new destination in Sydney will cater to the demands of over 5 million city residents with a menu offering over 20 distinct waves. Its ability to accommodate the greatest number of surfers and the greatest amount of waves each hour also makes it the most competitive choice in terms of sustainability and commerce, solidifying Wavegarden’s position as the global market leader in this developing industry.

Situated in Sydney’s Olympic Park, the 3.6-hectare establishment is intended to welcome 1,000 guests daily, seven days a week. Professional surfers hoping to refine their skills will also use it as a high-performance centre.

“This is a great moment for the URBNSURF team,” says Damon Tudor, CEO of URBNSURF. “Just like in Melbourne, URBNSURF Sydney offers perfect surfing conditions for everyone, and we are proud to celebrate this achievement and start building our community here.”

The New South Wales (NSW) Office of Sport contributed €620,000 to develop the high-performance surf centre, where many Australian professional surfers can train and, ultimately, improve their World Surf League ranking. The financing of this surf park was done through a public-private partnership because it was deemed strategically important for the region.

Wavegarden now has eight operational surf parks, which generate over 20% of revenue and average 200,000 visits annually. The ninth park is scheduled to debut in Edinburgh, Scotland, this autumn. In 2025, other wave parks will follow in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Virginia Beach, USA.

Earlier this year, Wavegarden announced that its third and biggest Wavegarden Cove in the UK is set to open in late 2025 in Birmingham.
