L-Acoustics, industry leaders in designing and manufacturing sound systems and technology, has shared how its L-ISA immersive audio solution has been used at the Ephesus Experience in Turkey.
Ephesus is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Turkey. The ancient city is home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and the Theatre of Ephesus, which could accommodate up to 24,000 people.
The Ephesus Experience is designed by DEM Museums and evokes the city’s heyday through a combination of world-class talent, L-ISA, and other innovative AV solutions.
Carolina Vallejo, creative producer at Marshmallow Laser Feast, producer of the Ephesus Experience Museum, says: “Using L-ISA fits like a glove. It’s a powerful combination of hardware and software together. It was easy to adopt, and we love working with it.
“The experience imagines life in ancient Ephesus. Audio is crucial to plunging visitors into that narrative. Technology is our medium. We create immersive experiences using the most innovative technologies. We’ve found that using L-ISA shortens our workflow, making it easy for us to create immersive soundscapes. The quality of the L-Acoustics speakers makes L-ISA technology the obvious choice.”
Immersive sound installation
James Bulley, a composer and sound designer, was inspired by extensive research with historians to create a vast and immersive aural environment, and composers such as Thomas Newman (American Beauty, Shawshank Redemption) and Nainita Desai (For Sama) have contributed to the score. The experience features performances from actors Olivia Williams (The Crown, The Sixth Sense) and David Schofield (Gladiator, Pirates of the Caribbean).
Visitors experience the immersive sound installation through the museum’s three spaces in a 360-degree configuration. This has been designed by Turkish L-Acoustics Certified Provider Asimetrik in collaboration with Marshmallow Laser Feast and Willi Klein, application engineer at L-Acoustics.
The design consists of 71 5XT positioned in the ceilings, distributed at body and ceiling height along the walls, and set at the foot and on top of pillars that are covered with video screens. 28 X8 coaxial speakers are installed at ceiling height around the walls, and in the main area, a cluster of one A10i Focus and one A10i Wide installed in a corner offers additional power. Low-end extension is provided by three KS21 and four SB15 subwoofers. The system is driven by seven LA7.16i amplified controllers.
Vallejo comments: “It was great working with the team at L-Acoustics. They supported us in our creative process and ensured the museum’s team was trained and ready to support the system once the Museum opened.”
Buğra Kezan, Asimetrik project engineering manager, adds: “We have been working with DEM Museums and we introduced them to L-ISA immersive audio for their very first project. They were already dreaming of offering a have a new, immersive audiovisual experience at Ephesus.
“L-ISA was the perfect choice for this new kind of museum experience; it facilitated the creative workflow, was easy to integrate, and offered the best audio experience.”
The experience has now been open for over six months and the installation has proved successful. The museum team has not met with any technical issues, and Kezan reports that the experience has delighted tourists from all around the world.
Last week, L-Acoustics released significant updates to L-ISA, its market-leading immersive production platform for the live sound and music creation sector.
