Wiegand, a family-owned manufacturer of toboggan runs, rail-mounted toboggans and stainless steel dry slides, has created five slide experiences for Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship, Utopia of the Seas, including the Ultimate Abyss double slide.
The slides, which are located in the ship’s water park area, launched in July 2024. They include two turbo slides and a bowl slide, and all feature acrylic sections which enhance excitement for both riders and spectators.
Record-breaking slides
The Ultimate Abyss is a double slide concept that rises 150 feet above sea level. This visual showstopper can be found onboard every ship in the fleet. For the Utopia of the Seas, its slides include special features that extend their length to 259 feet each. This makes Ultimate Abyss the world’s largest dry slides at sea.
Slide riders descend 10 storeys in only 19 seconds using a slide bag in race mode. Spirals and banked turns, lit with 300 LEDs, are accompanied by a surprise element as riders race side-by-side. Here, the track features booster rolls that swirl the rider around while a low separation between guests enhances the race experience.
Riders are then immediately confronted with a glass pane, making it appear that the slide is coming to an abrupt end. A hidden curve then leads the riders to the side, and they slide over the glass pane into the final roundabout and down to the landing.
The ship’s godmother Meghan Trainor took a ride on the Ultimate Abyss during the official inauguration ceremony.
High quality in almost any location
Wiegand’s dry slides invite riders to relive their childhood and experience speeds of up to 20km/h. They can be found at venues across the world, with locations ranging from cruise ships to art installations, shopping centres, hotels, and many more.
The slides are constructed from 2.5mm stainless steel, which combined with Wiegand’s extensive experience results in a high-quality, durable and safe attraction suitable for almost any location, indoors or outdoors.
Standard slides are TÜV Mark-certified in accordance with DIN 1176. Custom designs can also be developed if technically feasible and approved.
Recently, Wiegand revealed details of a new flagship tourist attraction in Romanshorn, Switzerland, developed with architect Susanne Fritz.
