Therme Group has selected a site in Washington, DC for its first wellness and water park resort in the US.
DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that Poplar Point, a 110-acre parcel of land on the east bank of the Anacostia River, will be the site of the new health and wellbeing destination.
“We know that Therme DC is a great fit for Poplar Point,” said Bowser.
The project will create jobs and “serve as a catalyst for economic growth along the Anacostia waterfront”, she said.
Therme DC to be built at Poplar Point
Therme Group plans to develop 15 of the 110 acres at Poplar Point into a unique attraction offering thermal baths, myriad saunas and wet rooms, thermal and mineral pools, waterslides, relaxation beds, immersive art, and a variety of restaurants.
“Therme DC will be a transformative addition to the city’s landscape and will set a new standard for how cities can integrate wellbeing into the fabric of urban downtowns, bringing access to green spaces, wellness and community-driven programming for both residents and visitors,” said Robert Hammond, president of Therme Group US.
Robert Hanea, chairman and CEO of Therme Group, said: “By combining cutting-edge technology with our commitment to sustainability and holistic wellbeing, we are setting a new standard for how cities can integrate wellness into everyday life.”

Poplar Point has remained undeveloped for decades, but with the arrival of Therme DC, the site will provide a 70-acre riverfront park and 23 acres for mixed-use development.
John Alschuler, chair of Therme Group US, said: “From the beginning, our goal has been to bring a unique, community-driven destination to our nation’s capital city.”
The new DC resort will “increase access to wellbeing, expand public green space and invest in a historically underserved neighbourhood”, he said.
It is estimated to generate $1.5 billion in tax revenue over 25 years, 5,000 local construction jobs during development, and 720 permanent jobs upon completion.
Poplar Point is currently federally operated land, with Washington, DC now working to transfer it to city control.
Last month, Therme Group revealed plans for 10 wellness resorts in the US over the next decade.
