Bletchley Park, a visitor attraction and museum near Milton Keynes, is creating an AI life-sized version of Alan Turing for a new interactive experience.

The artificial intelligence (AI) version of Alan Turing, known as the father of AI, is being created by Bletchley Park Trust in collaboration with UK-based AI company, 1956 Individuals.

The display at Bletchley Park, the home of British World War II codebreaking, will allow visitors to interact with and converse with the AI character in a range of languages.

Guests can ask the AI version of Turing questions about his life, the Enigma cipher and Bletchley Park’s role in the war.

Bletchley Park‘s director of public engagement, Rebecca Foy, said the experience will highlight the role of codebreakers in “the emergence of machine learning”.

“Alan Turing is considered the father of AI. Even without his wartime work at Bletchley Park, he would rightly be famous for his pioneering computing work alone,” she said.

The AI character uses facial recognition and can tailor its responses based on whether it’s speaking to an individual, a group, or children. Per a press release, this is a world-first.

“We couldn’t think of a better person to recreate in AI form than Alan Turing,” said Babita Devi, chief strategy officer of 1956 Individuals.

AI character to answer guests’ questions

“Visitors will be able to engage with his story in a new and compelling way, hopefully getting to know him and Bletchley Park a little better. This is a new and exciting form of interpretation, and we applaud Bletchley Park for their ambition and imagination.”

Sir Dermot Turing, Alan Turing’s nephew, said his “pioneering research on machine learning can be traced back directly to his work with machine solutions to codebreaking problems at Bletchley Park during World War II”.

The process of creating the AI character, including a digital likeness and voice, is expected to take several months. It will involve some of the UK gaming industry’s top digital character artists.
