Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for a 2034 FIFA World Cup stadium on top of The Line at Neom, a $500 billion tourism development.

The 46,000-seat stadium was revealed as part of Saudi Arabia’s uncontested bid to FIFA to host the 2034 World Cup.

“Neom Stadium will be the most unique stadium in the world,” the bid says. “With a pitch situated more than 350 meters above ground, stunning vistas, and a roof created from the city itself, the stadium will be an experience like no other.”

According to the bid, the new stadium will “leverage the most advanced technology for players, spectators and broadcasters”. It will only be accessible via high-speed lifts and driverless vehicles.

The stadium is planned as part of The Line‘s first district, which will be fully operational before the World Cup begins. This district will also include other venues for FIFA World Cup events, including a “fan festival site”.

It will be located in a sports-focused neighbourhood and will be accessible from multiple levels of The Line. Construction on the stadium is scheduled to begin in 2027, with completion due in 2032.

“The stadium will be run, like the rest of the city, entirely on renewable energy generated primarily from wind and solar sources,” the bid says.

11 new stadiums planned for Saudi

After the World Cup, the venue will become the home of a new Saudi Arabian professional football team. Before and after the tournament, it will serve as a landmark on The Line.

The stadium at Neom will be one of 15 stadiums hosting games at the 2034 World Cup, including a venue in Riyadh and another at the Qiddiya giga-project. 11 of these are new, the remaining four are refurbishments.

Saudi Arabia is creating many giga-projects and attractions as part the Public Investment Fund’s (PIF) Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy and reduce the kingdom’s reliance on oil.
